Hermès Ex-Libris silk scarf designed by legendary illustrator Hugo Grygkar, one of the most influential artists in Hermès history and creator of iconic house classics such as Brides de Gala. First introduced in 1946, Ex-Libris became one of the defining visual emblems of Hermès and remains among the maison’s most historically important carré designs. The composition centers around the famous Hermès medallion inspired by a 1923 bookplate commissioned by Émile-Maurice Hermès. Adapted from a drawing by Alfred de Dreux, the emblem incorporates the duc carriage, groom-at-waiting, and the caduceus associated with the Greek god Hermès — symbolizing commerce, movement, elegance, and refined exchange. Surrounding the central motif are four sophisticated horse-drawn carriages referencing original carriage-maker archives preserved in the Émile Hermès collection, paying tribute to the house’s equestrian roots and artisanal heritage.
